Creation District is taking point on the Sacramento 100 Day Challenge to Tackle Youth Homelessness. The goal is to achieve rapid rehousing for 200 young adults from ages 16 to 24 in 100 days, and so far the group has housed 153 people in about two months.

Ben Avey from Sacramento Steps Forward and Grace Loescher from Creation District join Insight to talk about the Point In Time Count and 100 Day Challenge to address homelessness in Sacramento.

The final rehearsal kicks off with a deep breath.

“I want you to close your eyes to imagine one moment in the show,” Grace Loescher gently instructs the artists for a group meditation.

They sit in a classroom narrowed by paintings, musical instruments and computer monitors on a Friday afternoon. But in their minds, it’s Sunday night, and they’re at Ace of Spades—backstage getting pumped in the green room, by the merch table signing autographs, alone onstage for the first time, looking out at the crowd.

The Creation District is an incubator for young artists experiencing homelessness or economic instability. It launched a new indie label earlier this year in Sacramento to mentor and support young musicians yearning to share their art with the community.

Creation District Records is hosting an album release show at Harlow’s to feature the young artists on its new mixtape album. The show will feature performances by artist-mentors So Much Light and Hobo Johnson. The Creation District's Grace Loescher and J KCHARMZ join in studio to share the experience and preview the show. You can see The Creation District Records all ages release party at Harlow’s on Wed. Sept. 12.

A creative hub and safe space for youth experiencing homelessness is now open in Sacramento. Julissa Ortiz visits the Creation District at 1219 S Street.

The Creation District at 1219, S St. offers a continuum of daily creative workshops that brings together youth and young adults experiencing homelessness together to tackle the work of building a brighter and braver future.

Sacramento, you’ve got a new space for creativity to grow. The Creation District is a place where young people from all backgrounds can be creative, under the tutelage of local artists. Maybe you saw the fruits of the CD at Harlow’s, where local disadvantaged youth got the opportunity to perform after working with Hobo Johnson and So Much Light. You can come check out the new digs, all 14,000 square feet, and meet some of the workshop leaders, performers and the future of the District. 815 S Street.

Three-time world champion spoken word artist, Buddy Wakefield, will be performing at The Sofia: Home of the B Street Theatre as part of an event benefiting The Creation District, a nonprofit arts and music program serving youth and young adults experiencing homelessness in Sacramento. He’ll be joined by local slam poets AndYes, Andru Defeye, Grace Loescher, Jeanette Sem and Tiffany Gold.

These are no ordinary painting or crafting courses, say organizers. The Creation District is about digging deep into the power of art in all its forms to address social problems. A recent session on subversive graffiti artist Banksy and guerrilla art, for example, explored the political significance of street art. A camp focused on literacy, meanwhile, culminated in building a pop-up library for an underserved community. The organization also offers a weeklong social justice course delving into the topic of homelessness, which includes the option to spend a night at a local shelter or on the street.

Sacramento is taking part of a 100 Day Challenge that aims to tackle youth  homelessness.

The Sacramento Continuum of Care Homeless Youth Task Force (HYTF) has embarked on a journey to house more than 200 homeless youth before March 6th, 2019.  Titled “The Sac 100 Day Challenge,” the effort is part of a worldwide vision set by the Rapid Results Institute
